Rebuilding after emotional pain is rarely a straightforward process. It required me to step outside of autopilot and become intentional about identifying what made me feel whole again. I had to make a conscious decision to focus on the people, practices, and environments that nurtured me rather than drained me.
One of the most transformative steps in this journey was making a commitment to myself: to stop making decisions that harmed me. While that may sound simple, it was far from easy. Before I began my self-love journey, self-destructive behaviors had become normalized in my life.
Hurting myself used to look like drinking every weekend to escape reality, or falling into fleeting relationships with emotionally unavailable men. These behaviors were familiar, but they were deeply rooted in pain. They served as temporary coping mechanisms that ultimately left deeper wounds.
It wasn’t until I took a step back and examined my patterns that I began to see things clearly. I started identifying the fractured parts of myself—unresolved emotional wounds that I had carried silently for years. These weren’t just bad habits; they were indicators of deeper healing that needed to happen.
Choosing to stop operating from a place of pain and instead prioritize emotional wellness and self-respect was a pivotal moment. Rebuilding required facing uncomfortable truths, setting new boundaries, and redefining what love, joy, and peace meant to me.
That process continues, but today it stands on a foundation of awareness, self-compassion, and a commitment to never abandon myself again.
Recognizing the Wound of Self-Abandonment
Self-abandonment is a silent and often invisible wound that many of us carry. It manifests in subtle behaviors and decisions that chip away at our self-worth over time. If you’ve ever felt like you were consistently betraying your own needs, suppressing your voice, or diminishing your light to keep others comfortable—you may be navigating self-abandonment.

Here are a few common signs:
- Putting everyone else’s needs before your own
- Avoiding conflict by staying silent when your boundaries are crossed
- Numbing with distractions like alcohol, scrolling, or overworking
- Seeking validation from people who are emotionally unavailable
- Ignoring your inner voice and intuition
In my own experience, I had become so accustomed to emotional pain that I mistook it for normal. I accepted neglect as love, confused chaos with passion, and equated being chosen with being worthy.
Why We Abandon Ourselves
Self-abandonment often begins in childhood. Many of us learned early on that love had to be earned—that our needs were burdensome or that being our authentic selves wasn’t safe. These beliefs become the foundation for how we show up in adulthood.
So we shrink ourselves to be accepted. We silence our needs to maintain peace. We wear emotional masks just to feel like we belong.
But what we abandon internally, we continue to chase externally. No partner, job, or achievement can fill the void left by self-abandonment. That healing must start from within.

How to Stop Abandoning Yourself
The first step in healing self-abandonment is awareness. When you can name the wound, you begin the process of reclaiming your power. Here are a few ways to start unmasking this pattern and begin nurturing yourself from the inside out:
- Get Radically Honest With Yourself
Take inventory of where you’re betraying your own truth. Are you overextending to be liked? Are you tolerating what drains you? Awareness leads to transformation. - Track Your Emotional Patterns
Use journaling to notice recurring emotional triggers and the environments or people that bring them up. These patterns are revealing. - Say No Without Guilt
Every time you say “no” to something misaligned, you say “yes” to your own peace. You don’t need to explain or justify your boundaries. - Reconnect With Your Inner Voice
Practice stillness—through meditation, walks, or reflective journaling—to tune back into your intuition. Your inner voice knows the way. - Create Boundaries That Center Your Well-being
Boundaries protect your energy. Enforce them not to keep others out, but to keep your sense of self intact. - Rewrite the Belief That Love Must Hurt
If you’ve equated love with pain, it’s time to unlearn that. True love is grounding, not confusing. It supports you, not breaks you.

Rewriting Your Story
True healing is about reclaiming the parts of yourself you once felt pressured to suppress. The parts of you that were labeled “too much,” “not enough,” or “unlovable.”
For me, it meant ending my relationship with emotional unavailability—not just in others, but in myself. I learned to stop avoiding my truth. I stopped escaping hard emotions and finally created space to feel, process, and release them.
Most of all, I stopped trying to be who I thought the world wanted me to be—and started becoming who I was always meant to be.
